How to approach my list
Well, I wrote about the 10 games out of Game Libary I wanna write about.
The more I browse through my libary, the more "problems" I see with this approach. Boiling down to it, in my opinion:
- Different Genres
- Different Lengths
- Different Philosophies
- Different Time Periods
Let me explain the Points quick:
Different Genres make it hard to describe something on the screen. A story heavy RPG or a Turn-Based Strategy game is in blog post easier to describe, than a fast First-Person-Shooter or a Racing game.
Different Lenghts is also a point. At what point will a game end? Will it end? Have I to set time boundaries for the game? Is there content gameplay wise, that I'll miss out, when I say after 10+ hours, it is enough?
Different Philosophies. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I try it in an example of the difference of the western RPGs and the mostly japanese RPGs. (also called JRPGs). There is a different approach to these games, from the aesthetics, the design and to the audience, they try to approach. But in a broader sense, they are the same genre. The Problem is here, that I know some things about RPGs, but I'm not an expert in any means. So can I pinpoint the differences?
Different Time Periods is another thing, I'm a little unsure. How should I handle different stereotypes or problematic topics, that I will eventual come across in gaming? Also can I measure games from the 80's like a modern game? Will I rate it that way?
So, yeah I got some thoughts stuck in my head. There is no real solution, so I'll take my approach here that way:
Genres: I'll describe as good as I can. I'll take screenshots, talking about what I like or dislike in that game or in the genre as a whole, and figure out how to recreate the sound of the BFG in Doom there.
Lengths: Some game needs time, some are fast shooter. But after 10 hours, I think I saw the most things of a game. If I really don't want to play it anymore, I'll stop at that time.
Philosophies: I think, I try, if I find material, to make a little blog post about the studio and what lies behind that Idea of the game, predecessors, legacy and probably impact. But this is more a "nice to have".
Time Periods: Things change and games too. So, I'll try to recreate what has changed but also how the games are working in my opinion. The problematic topics, that will eventually occur, I take the approach, that I'll point it out, and when it's bigger, I'll go deeper what this topic is.
As you see, I try to make a small "guidance", how I play these games.
And after re-reading it (Sorry if I miss a lot of spelling and grammatical errors), this approach can work with the Albums too.
Anyway, have a nice day/night
